馬來(lái)酸酐通過(guò)正丁烷的氣相氧化產(chǎn)生,整個(gè)過(guò)程將甲基轉(zhuǎn)化為羧酸鹽并使骨架脫氫,該方法的選擇性反映了馬來(lái)酸酐及其共軛雙鍵體系的穩(wěn)健性。
Maleic anhydride is produced by the gas-phase oxidation of n-butane. In the whole process, methyl is converted to carboxylate and the skeleton is dehydrogenated. The selectivity of this method reflects the robustness of maleic anhydride and its conjugated double bond system.

Traditionally, maleic anhydride is produced by oxidation of benzene or other aromatic compounds. As of 2006, only a few small factories continued to use benzene.

In both cases, benzene and butane are added to the hot air stream to make the mixture pass through the catalyst bed at high temperature. Control the air to hydrocarbon ratio to prevent ignition of the mixture. Vanadium pentoxide and molybdenum trioxide are catalysts for benzene pathway, while vanadium phosphate is used for butane pathway: C4H10 + 3.5o2 → c4h2o3 + 4H2O Δ H = - 1236kj / mol
